How the car donation process works
Start with the 2-minute donation form or a quick call
Begin by completing the WheelWise online donation form or calling Heritage for the Blind directly. You will share basic details such as the vehicle year, make, model, approximate condition, mileage if known, and where the vehicle is located in New Hampshire. You do not need to know the vehicle value, and you do not need to arrange towing yourself. This first step usually takes about two minutes and simply gives the donation team enough information to confirm eligibility and prepare the pickup. Heritage for the Blind is a real 501(c)(3) charity, EIN 58-2164446.
A coordinator calls back to schedule your free pickup
After your form or call is received, a donation coordinator typically calls back within 1-2 business hours. They will confirm the vehicle location, review title questions, and help schedule a convenient free pickup time. In many New Hampshire metro areas, including Manchester, Nashua, Concord, Portsmouth, and nearby suburbs, pickup may be available the same day or next business day. Rural and North Country locations may require a little more scheduling time, but there is still no towing charge to you. The coordinator will explain exactly what to expect before the driver arrives.
Prepare the title, keys, and pickup location
Before pickup, gather the vehicle title, any available keys, and remove personal belongings from the car, truck, van, SUV, motorcycle, or other donated vehicle. If your registration documents are handy, keep them nearby in case the coordinator or towing partner asks a question. The most important item is the title, because you will sign it over at pickup. If your vehicle is parked in a driveway, garage, apartment lot, workplace, or storage facility, make sure the tow truck can safely reach it. If you have title concerns, ask before pickup so the team can guide you.
A licensed tow truck arrives and you sign the title
At the scheduled time, a licensed tow truck arrives at your New Hampshire location to pick up the vehicle at no cost. You do not have to make the vehicle pass inspection or even have it running, as long as the pickup details were accurately shared in advance. The driver will verify the vehicle, collect the keys if available, and have you sign the title over at pickup. This appointment is usually straightforward and brief. Once the vehicle is loaded, your part of the physical donation process is complete.
Your vehicle is sold to create charitable proceeds
After pickup, the vehicle is transported to an auction or parts reseller, depending on condition, age, demand, and local resale options. The goal is to turn the donated vehicle into proceeds for Heritage for the Blind, which supports services for people who are blind or visually impaired. You do not have to choose the auction, negotiate with buyers, handle repairs, or manage paperwork connected to the sale. The donation program handles that work for you. From initial donation to final tax receipt, the full process typically takes about 2-6 weeks.
Your tax receipt is mailed after the vehicle sells
Once the vehicle sells, your tax documentation is mailed to you. If the vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind provides IRS Form 1098-C. If the vehicle sells for $500 or under, you receive a written acknowledgment. Keep this document with your tax records and speak with a qualified tax professional about how a vehicle donation may apply to your return. There is no cost to donate, no towing fee, and no hidden service charge. The receipt is the final step in the WheelWise donation process.
